Prisk Elementary School
Since 1995, designer, steward, and director Mike Letteriello has taught and promoted Prisk Native Garden, on the grounds of Prisk Elementary School in Long Beach, California, as the model and template for other "schoolyard habitats" of whatever size on any campus at any level. Prisk Garden has grown over time to be an "outdoor museum" with approximately 300 species of native plants, together with native California animal species, such as arroyo chub, western fence lizards, and native frogs and toads. Prisk is also designed to attract pollinators of every description, as well as avian life. Informational signage abounds. The life sciences are taught by Mike and Prisk science teacher, David Macander, as well as social studies such as the ethnobotanical history of the various native plants.
